Setting up an effective classroom library takes a lot of work and money! What's the point of having awsome books if the students can't find them?
I have been adding to my classroom library over the years and I can honestly say I have a great collection of books. Thanks to programs like donorschoose, I have been able to build a library full of high-interest multi-leveled texts. The problem is, the more books you have the more complex the management of the library becomes. Not only does it have to be inviting, it has to be organized in a way that enables the students to use it independently while taking advantage of everything it has to offer.
Our classroom library needs both book bins to keep the books organized and easy to find and bean bags to make it inviting. By having book bins, I will be able to sort books by genre, author, and level. Students will be able to retrieve and return books using a simple system made possible with the bins. The bean bags are perfect for encouraging the students to get comfortable while diving into a literacy adventure.
I have put a great deal of time and money into creating a classroom that students look forward to entering everyday. Unfortunately, this adds up and finding ways to be resourceful is critical. The library is an essential part of the classroom; it provides resources, adventures, reinforcement, and enjoyment for the students to obtain independently. By having a system that works using the book bins, students are empowered and are closer to taking control of their own learning. The bean bags add that extra "umph" that make relaxing in the library that more enjoyable.
