My students need hands-on materials to truly engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate the three laws of motion.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Without a question, what is the purpose? Without knowledge, how will we know? Without hands-on materials, how will we understand? Without direction, how will we proceed?
Our school is a theme based school.
It houses a well established two way immersion (English/Spanish) program. Its goal is for students (Pre-Kindergarten-8th) to become proficient in both Spanish and English. The Two-Way Instructional model is integrated with the district's adopted Balanced Literacy Model for elementary, as well as the 5E Model for secondary students. Students learn and acquire literacy in the early years in homogeneous language.
98% of our students receive free breakfast/hot lunch. We are a high poverty school.
My Project
Our students lack the necessary background knowledge to even begin to understand Force and Motion. They understand what a force is and what motion is, but when we begin to study Newton's 3 laws of motion, they begin to struggle. Using a textbook defines and explains the 3 laws of motion, but without hands on materials, there is no comprehension and therefore, no understanding. To compensate for these struggles, we are trying to acquire a Fan Cart, Impact Car, Constant Speed Vehicle, Spring-Loaded Cart Set, and Ballistics Car, as well as a Newtonian Demonstrator and Second Law of Motion Demonstrator. With these materials, the students can move them, touch them, observe them, analyze the results, and most importantly, internalize their comprehension.
A quote from Sir Isaac Newton, "We build too many walls and not enough bridges."
I feel in education, too many times we build up walls for our students by using only texts and worksheets to teach the lessons, especially for those who are limited in their background knowledge.
I want to build bridges. I want to pave the way for each step of their learning and I can do this with hands-on materials.
