We are located in an extremely overcrowded elementary school in New York. We work very hard and appreciate learning through laughter, fun, and play. It is a long school day when all we do is sit in our seats and work.
You often hear an explosion of laughter coming from my classroom.
First grade is an awesome place for any child to be. I am a first grade teacher for a very eager and excitable group of children. I am truly a lucky teacher.
My Project
I have been trying to get parents to attend different workshops in my classroom. These workshops are geared for family engagement, yet I have to admit I have had a very poor turnout.
Someone very wisely suggested that perhaps parents need an extra incentive to come to my workshops.
After thinking about it, after all they have to take time out of very busy days, I thought that Amazon gift cards would be the perfect incentive. My plan is to raffle off a gift card during all our workshops. I'm hoping that the gift card will be something that initially brings a family in, but the enjoyment and learning will make them return. The big dream is that the workshops become popular.
There is great news: Parents have started attended my workshops. The word was spread that there was a chance to not only learn, have fun but to go home with a little something special. I now have quite an number of parents and we are developing a nice little community. Toward the end of the year I am running a series of workshops for my parents on how to prepare for the next grade. I know the Amazon gift cards will add a lovely note to our meetings and make this school year memorable.
My students will definitely benefit from our workshops also. They are welcome to attend with their parents, thereby building a stronger bond between them. Plus, I intend to have hands on activities that my parents can do with their children, hopefully to make educational fun assessable. Parents and children can enjoy learning if they are just shown different ways to learn.
