I teach a very eager group of diverse students with a number of different races, ethnicities and languages. They are 3, 4 and 5 years old. For many of them, this is their first exposure to a school setting. We are an urban district with very limited funds for materials and supplies. My students deserve quality materials as much as any other students in more affluent districts. They should not have to go without materials we need to help them learn all they can in Prekindergarten.
My Project
In my preschool class, gathering together on our Circle Time area rug is something we do numerous times per day. Some of the activities we enjoy are literacy, math, singing, movement activities and group meetings or discussions. We also have grants that bring in guest presenters who come in to teach the class about specific topics of interest and importance to young children. Our rug is very important to us! There was not one in the class when I arrived three years ago. I purchased a cheaper but serviceable one out of my own pocket at that time. It has seen much use as well as bodily fluids over those years. We desperately need a new one! The one I chose will give each student an assigned place to sit so there is no arguing over whose spot is whose!
