As the Literacy Coach for my elementary school, I am constantly searching for ways to support my teachers in the use of current best practices in literacy instruction. This is especially important in ensuring that our students succeed in building strong foundational reading skills. This is where UFLI Foundations soars in to help.
Based on the Science of Reading, UFLI Foundations follows a carefully developed scope and sequence designed to ensure that students systematically acquire needed foundational literacy skills and learn to apply each skill with automaticity and confidence.
With the explosion of knowledge surrounding the science of reading - how our brains become wired to read - these manuals provide a simple and easy-to-follow guide to all the background knowledge and explanations that teachers need to effectively and efficiently teach students to read and spell. Starting with phonemic awareness - the ability to manipulate sounds in words - these manuals provide the reasoning behind teaching this skill and lessons for introducing rhyming, beginning/middle/ending sound isolation, and sound substitution.
The manual then walks teachers through processes for helping students learn how to sound out words in order to decode (read) and encode (spell) words with increasing difficulty. By ensuring that all of my teachers have this knowledge and can apply their learning, we can make certain that all of our 1st - 3rd-grade students receive a solid early literacy foundation that allows them to be successful readers and writers.
