Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help my students learn tolerance! I teach 8th grade English in a high-need, high-poverty public school in New York. My school is extremely diverse with a large population of students who are brand new to the country.

Since the million dollar budget cut, my school is no longer able to afford reading books for the students. The units of study that my school would like us to teach are outdated and not challenging enough. I would love to get more recent and meaningful books into the curriculum.

I have asked for a class set of Night and 12 Maus books. I have asked for these books because a goal of mine this year is to work closely with the Social Studies teacher to help reinforce skills through cross-curricular activities. One of our goals is to teach the Holocaust unit together. I believe by reading Night and Maus, the students will gain a much better understanding of the Holocaust. They will learn the dangers of stereotyping and the importance of tolerance.

Your help and support will ensure that my students leave middle school with a better understanding of why tolerance is so important in our world. By teaching them this valuable lesson, hopefully history will not repeat itself.
