Help me give my students access to a variety of leveled readers to improve their ability to independently read on a daily basis and build reading fluency.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
There is a wide range of diversity in these multi age classrooms. The students live in New Orleans, with 50% of the students residing near the school. The classrooms are Bilingual Montessori classrooms where the students are instructed in both English and French. The three-year curriculum allows the students to be met exactly where they are academically and socially.
This unique school is open enrollment which allows children of all incomes and academic proficiency level to receive an education from a curriculum that is often reserved for private schools.
Forty percent of children in New Orleans are part of families below the poverty line, many of these students are in our classrooms.
Many of the students are gifted in the arts (dance, music, musical theater, and visual arts). Because of our diversity, we encourage the students be true to themselves. This allows for much creativity in the classrooms.
All classrooms are inclusive and include students with learning exceptionalities.
My Project
We will use these leveled readers to create an inviting library with book bins so that students can shop for "just right" readers for his/her weekly reading bags. Each child will have independent reading time daily.
Students need access to lots of books that they can read with high levels of accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
They need opportunities to consolidate skills so that they can use skills and strategies with automaticity, with fluid engaged reading.
Having a complete set of leveled readers will provide the opportunity for the students to read increasingly complex texts appropriate for each child's reading level.
