My Students

Do you remember all the distractions you experienced while you were in school? Imagine having your senses heightened and the simple humming of the lights or the ticking of the clock was enough to distract you from learning. My students with autism experience this every day.

I have a fabulous group of students who all have been diagnosed with autism.

They have a learning style that differs from their typically developing peers. It is often difficult for them to focus in class because of their heightened senses and the distractions that come along. The use of light filter will reduce distractions while learning new skills. My students crave pressure to the point that they purposely run into walls. The use of lap pads will create the pressure that they desire in an appropriate way that will allow them to participate in instruction. Lastly, some students benefit from having fidget toys to feed their sensory needs. We are located at a public school in a very small district. We hope to find ways to cope with our many special needs so that we may, one day, rejoin our typically developing peers in the general education setting.

My Project

The students in my classroom need these materials to help filter excessive light and humming. They need to have a work environment that meets their unique needs as a person with autism. My students have trouble sitting in circle, participating in small groups, and walking across campus without some sort of sensory input. These materials will provide my students with an appropriate way to achieve the sensory input they seek.

This project is important because, my goal as a special education teacher is to foster as much independence as possible for my students.

These materials will give these students with autism a chance to access curriculum and make growth in the hopes of, one day, rejoining their typically developing peers in the general education setting.
