I teach in a small, rural community at a Title I school. I have a great group of fun-loving, creative, and active first graders. In order to master our rigorous standards, I try to encourage hands-on exploration, implement technology, and provide engaging activities to make learning meaningful to all my students.
I know that children learn best by doing, exploring, and experiencing things and I want to give my students the opportunity to see the world from our little classroom!
My students are creative, innovative, and curious!
In our upcoming plant and animal unit, I would like students to have the opportunity to think and problem solve in an engaging, hands-on way.
We will use the MakeDo cardboard construction kits and craft sticks to create animal shelters and use the UV color changing beads to test the shelters’ effectiveness in the sun and elements. We will also construct a plant “maze” and test the idea that plants will grow toward the sun.
Allowing my students to create and test ideas will encourage more meaningful connections to our 1st grade content.
