Help me give my students gloves, gardening tools, and a cart to store them in so they can work in their community garden to reduce waste in the environment and grow healthy vegetables.
Our district is one of the most diverse in the nation. Our students come from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds, speak multiple languages and perform on a wide range of academic abilities. It is amazing to educate children who are so different from one another. They have some of the most fun and vibrant personalities and I am excited every day I am able to work with them. I have never met more hardworking students!
With all of the demands we put on our young students, they deserve a chance to learn through hands-on activities, in a fun and engaging environment.
We try our best as a school and community to present our students with creative ways to express their knowledge. I am so excited to bring new opportunities to my students. I can't wait to inspire them to become more motivated learners and kinder citizens.
My Project
Our Alaskan students are so excited for summer! It doesn't only mean no more snowgear and longer daylight hours, but a chance to work in their school garden. Many community members have come together to help our students transform existing beds into a place where children can grow healthy vegetables, herbs, and edible plants for a local organization (The Children's Lunchbox) that supplies children in need, with fresh food. With Earth Day just around the corner, students have been learning about the benefits of sustainable living, The 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle), and taking care of our Earth.
Our students want an opportunity to reduce waste in the environment by growing their own food, while learning how to work together, be responsible for keeping their plants healthy, and giving back to the community.
We need gloves to protect the students hands while they are transplanting the starters they have grown in their classroom windows. They also need little spades and shovels to work the dirt and learn how to transplant their tiny plants. A large, durable cart will help them keep their materials organized and easy to roll in and out when they need it. Students and families will be helping to take care of the garden throughout the summer when school is not in session. This truly will be a community effort and the students are really excited to get their hands dirty for a good cause!
