This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work with a targeted group of “at promise” students many of who aspire to go into the field of engineering. They belong to pathways, or academies, with classes that focus on the arts, architecture, manufacturing, construction, and engineering. My students are amazing, resilient students but are struggling in many areas including academics, attendance, and conduct. This year I have embedded social emotional learning and character building into my classroom activities more than before; goal setting and progress monitoring has been an ongoing cycle. I am trying to debunk the notion that they have to be “perfect” and that perfection is the ultimate goal.
I like to have regular celebrations and rewards to acknowledge all progress students have made, no matter how small.
Everyone works harder and feels more confident when they are acknowledged and feel seen, heard, and understood- our students should be rewarded for their efforts. Many students may not have reached “perfection,” but they have made improvements and made progress that should be recognized.
The items on this project will be used for an end of year celebration with treats, games, activities and prizes. The gift cards will be awarded to students who have met certain goals and criteria, especially in the areas of attendance, academics, and conduct. All students will receive individual treats and participate in the "Shine Bright" celebration, hence the decorations, but those that have made the most progress will receive the extra prizes.
