My first graders attend a great school in Northern California. The school that I work for is in a high-poverty area. Some of my students face the normal things that are often associated with poverty. These obstacles do not impact their love for school. My students love to learn new things and are very excited about learning how to read.
I am very happy that I work at a school where the staff really believes that all students can achieve academic success with the right support and mindset.
Some things can not be taught from a textbook. My students need an opportunity to get on the classroom and learn about the world they live in. The SF Aquarium of the Bay would help my students learn about local marine animals. They would be able to see and actually touch some of them. One first grade learning goal is for them to learn how different animals have special features that help them thrive in their environment. At the aquarium they would be able to learn about these features, making what's in their science textbooks much more meaningful.
My students attend a Title I school that receives 100% free lunch.
There is no budget for field trips. We have no PTA, and it would not be possible to go to parents for funding. Wealthy schools do not have this problem, they go to the PTA or parents to cover the costs of trips, if there is no money in the budget for them. My students deserve to have the same experiences as other students. Please help them have a wonderful hands-on learning experience that they will cherish for years to come.
