This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 17 kindergarten students are eager to learn and enjoy stories read to them and in need of having technology readily available to them. They come from a low socioeconomic background and in most cases come from homes where parents do not read to them, or do not have the means to access technology. My students live in an impoverished community in East Los Angeles. My students are from predominantly Latino backgrounds. They range from newly arrived immigrants to third-generation immigrants. I have students that do not have adequate resources to keep learning from home. The students that I work with are receiving free school lunches. Despite the challenges my students face, they are happy children who want to learn.
My Project
These materials will enable my students to learn and practice counting. My students need to build fluency in number recognition, oral counting, and counting objects. These materials will allow for my kindergarten students to practice the skills, I am teaching them. Counting is an essential building block of mathematics. Children must learn to count accurately since it is the foundation of their ability to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division later in their math journey. Throughout elementary school, children build on their early ideas of counting and quantity to understand the base-ten structure of our number system.
