My students need amazing children's literature like One Duck Stuck, and Even Steven & Odd Todd that has a math problem solving activity hiding in the story.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Math textbooks are BORING. And, they don't require the kids to use problem solving skills or real life scenarios to do math. I need a set of great literature that can be used to create math problems, relating to the story, for the students to work on.
I am a fifth year, second grade teacher in a Title I school and that means that my students come from low socioeconomic households.
Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, reading, and writing skills.
My Project
Kids adore reading fantastic literature in second grade. Brain research has shown that when kids make connections with text they are reading, they are more likely to comprehend and remember it. Similar research exists with math problem solving. If kids have a real connection to the mathematics, solving the math problem is engaging. Creating math problems around the plot of lovable books becomes a way to motivate them to solve real world math. The kids find these math problems highly engaging and talk about them for weeks to come. Their math thinking becomes a part of the world they are connected to and a story they love. It creates a lasting impression and lasting understanding of the math concepts.
This set of books would create a powerhouse of reading, math, and writing experiences during math class.
After the books is read and cherished together, a mathematical problem solving task will be posed based on the story. As the students work on the math project, they are expected to write their math thinking using words, numbers, and pictures in order to communicate with classmates about their ideas. The books will create a community of readers and mathematicians!
