This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 6th, 7th and 8th-grade students in the Mandarin Dual Language program desire to excel in Mandarin in an immersive environment. According to the research, academic levels of children educated in a dual language immersion program often surpass those of children educated in English only. My students live in a low-income area and they are eager to read, write, and learn Mandarin! My students attend a school funded through Title I, and yet many of my students aspire to learn a second language.

In my Mandarin dual language program, students have more exposure to the target language and understand Chinese culture and the people.

Thus, they are getting ready to better opportunities in a globalized world where the USA and China will continue to be major players.

My Project

As a Mandarin dual language teacher, my students are learning Mandarin not only in their elective Mandarin class but also in their Science class. I teach in both English and Mandarin and sometimes students are independently watching videos in English or Mandarin to supplement their learning. Which is why I am in desperate need of a class set of headphones! I need headphones so that students can independently watch videos and continue to learn at their own pace. Our current set of headphones are broken and I constantly have to ask students to bring their own headphones. Some students forget to bring their headphones and some students simply do not have a set of headphones to bring to school.
