Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The almost 900 students at our school live in a low-income neighborhood with limited access to basic school supplies. We are a Title I school with almost all of the students qualifying for free breakfast and free lunch each day.
Although my students have limited access to resources, they are enthusiastic to come to school each day to learn many new standards.
I look forward to giving my students many of the much-needed supplies this year by asking the generous donors of Donors Choose to provide these supplies.
My Project
Last year, I was fortunate enough to receive 6 Breakout boxes from Donors Choose. My students have enjoyed solving puzzles and riddles to try and "breakout" of the boxes. We have been able to have fun while learning about the solar system, healthy food choices, and math concepts.
A few of the Breakout boxes need updating since the locks have broken over time and no longer work.
After solving a series of puzzles or riddles, students are given a code to use to unlock one lock on the box. These codes are three digits, four digits, directions such as north, south, east, west, or the code spells out a five letter word. Usually, there are a minimum of four locks on each box, therefore, they solve at least four puzzles to unlock the four locks. Over time, some of these locks have broken or have been accidently reset by the students and no longer work.
We will replace any of the locks that no longer work, so we can continue to use these fun learning tools in the classroom.
Thank you for considering our project this school year.
