My Students
"Human resources are like natural resources; they're often buried deep. You have to go looking for them, they're not just lying around on the surface. You have to create the circumstances where they show themselves."
~ Sir Ken Robinson
Our middle school is located next to some of the toughest neighborhoods in Southern California.
My students confide to me that gang members live on their street ,they know where to buy drugs, and they have bad examples at every street corner. The high school next door to our middle school, where they will most likely go, has a 50% dropout rate. Despite all of this, my students tell me that they all want to go to college one day, and they have big dreams for the future. Studies have shown that students will make the decision to stay in school or dropout while still in middle school. That's why staying motivated right now, in the second semester of school, is so important and helps the most in closing the achievement gap.
My Project
In my Theatre Arts class, students work together in groups to earn points for being on time to class, bringing all of their supplies, doing their homework, participating in Theatre activities, and following our classroom behavior expectations. In Theatre Arts, we focus on improving observation, concentration, trust, imagination, self-confidence, and ensemble building skills; things that are not only important in my class, but will also lead to life skills that will help them in the future. Working in groups allows them to practice these skills and helps to prepare them for the jobs of the future. Because technology is moving so fast, we may not know what kind of jobs they will have, but we know that these are skills they are going to need. At the end of the week, the group with the most points earns a raffle ticket. An iPad Mini and two iPod Shuffles would be fantastic prizes for this raffle and would motivate my students to do their best each and every day.
By motivating students to do well in my class, you are also motivating them to succeed in education and in learning for life.
Students are far less likely to drop out of school if they feel successful and a part of a group that works to help them be their best. My Theatre Arts class can help to do this with your help. You can help make a difference in the lives of my students and stop them from becoming one more statistic in the dropout rate.
