This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In the heart of the cultural center in midtown Detroit, I teach pre-kindergarten students who are a part of the Great Start Readiness Program. The program is a state-funded preschool for four-year-old children with factors that may place them at risk of educational failure.
For many of my students, GSRP will be their first experience in a school setting.
When they have an impressionable, positive experience in their early years, it can set the path to success for the future.
My Project
A light table can open a student's eyes to a new way of learning. Opportunities for science, math, literacy, and writing can all be explored when shown in a "different light".
A light table creates an inviting learning space that can draw students in.
When they come to the light, they can discover new ways to play and manipulate materials. A once ignored or forgotten toy becomes something new when played on a light table. The light creates an additional sensory experience that transforms ordinary objects into something exciting.
Light is what stimulates sight and makes things visible and preschoolers need that light to grow their curiosity in the classroom.
