This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to listen to others read with feeling and emotion. The challenge my students face is realizing they too can read with feeling and emotion. The ability to record themselves, listen to the recordings, and revise the recordings can create expressive readers and reviewers in my class

My fourth grade students range from highly motivated learners to very reluctant learners.

Half of the students in my classroom are reading at least one grade level below their current grade level. The majority of my students come from lower income households and have little academic support at home. The students are smart and can shine when given the opportunity and motivation. Our school is located in a Northern Michigan city with mainly middle and upper class families, but our school is populated by lower income families. Our school has free breakfast and lunch for all of the students. Our school is in an area of high cultural poverty. The challenges are many but the rewards are greater.

My Project

The headphones I am requesting will allow my students to listen to expressive reading. The students will be able to record themselves reading, listen to their reading, practice the reading, and re-record themselves. This will allow the students to hear that they too are expressive, fluent readers. As the students grow in their reading fluency, they will also grow in reading comprehension. This reading growth will allow the students to grow in all academic areas. The students will also use the headphones to record book reviews and recommendations for their classmates and fellow students. As the students complete the individual books they are reading, the students will use a program that will allow them to record themselves reviewing the book they have read. The other students will be able to use the headphones to listen to the reviews. By listening to what other students have to say about books, students will be inspired to read new books their peers have recommended.

Inspiring my students to become readers is important to their future success in the classroom and in life.

The students need to feel good about themselves as readers in order to be successful. I want the students to realize that they can become expressive, fluent readers. I also want students to attempt to read different novels so they can find a genre they love. Once students find a type of book or a book series they love, they become hooked and their lives as readers can blossom and grow.
