My students need 12 supplies such as tactile letter and sight words cards, phonics chips, and index cards for writing and manipulation, in order to develop their literacy skills.

Help our struggling readers become literate! I am a Literacy Specialist working with grades Pre-K - 2, in a fairly rural Northern New York public school district. We are working hard to provide early intervention and set up a sturdy literacy foundation for our students.

As a Title 1 School, many of our children are having difficulty learning to read using conventional methods. These kids need alternate, small group instruction so that it is individualized to meet their unique needs. My goal is to put in place the necessary literacy concepts that will allow these children to be successful in school and as adults. Our school district has provided us with Structured Language training as a method to use primarily with the dyslexic children in our school. This program provides children with a systematic and explicit approach that is based on hands on activities. We work step by step working on developmentally appropriate concepts until they are mastery.

In order for this program to work its magic, there are some necessary materials that are needed. Because this approach is based on manipulating materials, and tactile, hands on activities, the tactile alphabet and sight word cards will be very beneficial. The double sided chips are manipulatives that will be used for the phonetic piece of the program. The index cards will be used for student writing and will be filed in the boxes. I have requested one box for each grade level for classroom management purposes as I work with approximately 30 children daily.
