My students need materials which help them use their talents to build confidence in school; they need tools to help them work with learning disabilities in a way that builds strategies for success. This includes seat sacks, a cassette player, and My To Do Pocket folders.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students and families are ready to learn and ready to succeed, supported by strong community involvement and pride in their families, heritage and school. Our school population is 95% Hispanic, with nearly 41% learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Families and teachers prepare students for the pathway to college and career, which is key for our students: the average income for residents within the school's zip code is significantly less than the state's average.
Despite, and often because of, such challenges, our students eagerly participate in both bilingual and monolingual curricula, along with many other opportunities for student growth including technology and engineering projects, ballroom dance, and after school wrap-around programs.
Our attendance is excellent because our students come here to learn and succeed.
My Project
School can be a tough place for students who lack skills which have traditionally defined "intelligence". I know that my students really want to learn. I also know that they do not feel good about themselves when, time after time, they struggle to do what comes easily to others.
The supplies I have requested will help my students to overcome some of their biggest hurdles: organization and focus.
If students have chair pockets, they can store the notebooks and supplies they need to carry when they visit their Special Education teacher. The "To Do" folders will help them focus on organization. They will also benefit when reading if they have the colored overlays and line guides.
Lastly, I need to support manual dexterity in those children who have sloppy writing. At the same time, we need to celebrate the creativity and talent of all students. So, the art supplies and sign language cards will help us address these needs. I want all my children to feel the power of success and the joy of creative tasks. This is an opportunity to reach them and help them grow.
