Building independence is very important for my special need preschool students. Removing their backpack and coat, hanging them up independently is the first step to independence. It will get more difficult soon when winter in Alaska begins and we add all their winter gear. Help us get organized.
We have two classes of adorable special needs preschool students ages three and four.
They have a wide range of abilities that we build on and disabilities that we work to minimize. We are part of a wonderful public school that has pre-K through 5th grade. We are in a very small classroom with no coat cubbies.
My Project
One of the most important skills we teach is independence and self care skills. Currently we do not have a good orginization system for teaching students to independently care for their personal items. We need coat cubbies. We teach removing backpacks, coat, shoes and winter gear. We also teach how to independently put them back on. These skills are life changing for both children and parents. This is especially true in the winter in Alaska when children have many layers of winter gear.
Learning to be responsible for their own things give students confidence and independence.
These skills will assist my students to preparing to enter Kindergarten; to be independent at home and in the community.
