This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 25 kindergarten students are eager to learn and enjoy stories read to them and in need of having technology readily available to them. They come from a low socioeconomic background and in most cases come from homes where parents do not read to them, or do not have the means to access technology. My students live in an impoverished community in East Los Angeles. My students are from predominantly Latino backgrounds. They range from newly arrived immigrants to third generation immigrants. I have two students that face homelessness as well. The students that I work with are receiving free school lunches. Despite the challenges my students face, they are happy children who want to learn.
My Project
The benefits from playing with musical instruments are many for young children, the following are some specific areas that note the importance of instruments and how these can help with their learning.
Playing with musical instruments can speed up brain development, specifically in the areas of language development, speech, listening and reading skills.
Also, when children are able to create and explore using musical instruments, it can help create more pathways in their brain.
In addition, playing with musical instruments can build upon gross and fine motor skills, and an extra plus in the classroom improves their listening skills!
