Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have intellectual disabilities, physical and/or visual impairments and over half are bused into our school from surrounding neighborhoods. My students are kind, sweet, giving and empathetic to anyone who needs help or assistance. They also try their hardest everyday to do the best they can.
That said, many times they are overlooked for what people think they can't do, rather than what they can.
While my students are in grades 4-6, they vary in the cognitive range of preschool through second grade. They work endlessly, always eager to learn new things and everyone of them come to school with a smile on their face. They never complain about school or learning; they see it as gift and find value in everything about school, even homework!
They are grateful, kind, loving students who bring happiness to others and they always have a smile for anyone who needs it.
My Project
For so long, my students have walked the hallways and have seen the showcase bulletin boards, seeing what their non-disabled peers were able to create independently. Fine motor limitations, visual disabilities and cognitive impairments have made art and showcasing creativity difficult. With the Cricut Explore 2 and the supplies needed, they can find an image, a font or a design, and use technology to create a beautiful work of art, a mini-book, a card or a project that is worthy of their unique talent.
While many of my students are able to use existing classroom technology to engage with the curriculum, their disabilities greatly affect their ability to show how creative they are.
It is so heartbreaking to see a child work on a piece of writing and then get so frustrated when they are unable to illustrate what they see in their mind. It is very frustrating for my older students who wish to create like their peers, only to be limited by what they cannot control.
This order can help my students create over three hundred DIY items with the touch of a few buttons. Papers can be scored for easy folding, words can be printed and cut out and the things they want to create are more attainable with the assistance of this technology. It would let them be more independent. The teacher would not have to help them; they would be able to help themselves and have more autonomy in what they do.
