This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I know every teacher thinks that their students are special, and they're probably right. But, I know for certain how special our students are! My school loops with students for 3 years. If you start in Kindergarten you follow those same children to 1st grade and then second grade. If you start with 3rd grade you see them through 4th and then 5th grade. I've had the honor of graduating two groups of 5th graders.

As a teacher for 24 years, I always tend to fall in love with my students.

But, when you spend 3 years with the same cohort of students and parents, it becomes something completely different. It takes on a whole new meaning. It takes on a life of its own.

There is a real sense of community, love, and family. Departing is the hardest part but every teacher should be so lucky. This year I am super excited because I get to start with Kindergarten. These little people are like sponges.They are so excited and so willing to learn. I hope to acquire some of the things I will need to set them up for success. After all we'll be together for 3 years.

My Project

At first I thought it was a bunch of malarkey. But, one of my motivations behind this project was a very special workshop I took this summer. The PD helped me with self awareness and social awareness. It helped me to be a more active listener. Another important take away was to take the time to breathe and listen to my body. I know that my students will definitely benefit from the tools I acquired during this workshop.

Yoga mats would make it super real for my kindergartners.

Kindergartners love hands-on activities. The thought in my mind of them excited to unroll their yoga mats, to breathe as a way of starting our morning and ending our days is beautiful.

With time and practice this will be a part of our daily routine. A way to help them settle in and focus. A way for them to get in touch with their emotions so that they will perform socially and academically even better.
