Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students live in Southside Stockton, where there are many economic and family issues they face everyday. Our school receives 100% free/reduced breakfast and lunch due to high poverty levels in the area.
Many of these students live with their relatives and not their parents for various reasons.
There are a few who were born here, but have since experienced the loss of a parent because deportation. They come to school in the rain without warm clothes, come to school hungry because there is no food at home, and don't have the glasses they need because their guardians can't afford them.
These students are special because they still come to school, regardless of their hardships, with the goal of changing their life. We spend a lot of time teaching them about college, setting life goals, and teaching them how to be successful in their life. We share our obstacles with each other and support one another in overcoming each challenge.
My Project
Having these materials to use in the classroom will make students excited to learn about Newton’s Laws. This will allow my students to build a better understanding of each of Newton’s Laws while having fun in our classroom. It is difficult to teach NGSS in middle school with minimal supplies. I work hard to ensure that my students have an understanding of all the topics, but reading from books and the internet can get boring for students. I would love to give them the opportunity to have hands on experiences with these materials to help deepen their knowledge and understanding of everything that we do in science.
