Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On March 15, NYC schools announced that they would be transitioning into remote learning due to COVID 19. I had just two days to prepare and figure out how I would help my early learners and their families transition over to this new platform of education. Due to this pandemic, this all stopped forcing them to adapt to a new routine of school at home. We had been abruptly separated with no way to explain and prepare my students and their families for what would come next. My students participate in our Google Classroom to go over new material and to check in with each other. They require fully interactive materials that they can complete and submit online.
I teach a class of 8 wonderful students with autism.
My students have a variety of learning styles and receive services that support their learning in school. Adult modeling and social interactions are very important aspects of our daily learning. This pandemic has brought on new stressors for my students.
My Project
My students have a mandated 12-month school program. After 10 weeks of online learning, I have learned that my students respond best to seeing the staff they have come to know so well, live on their screens. I do live teachings every day where I engage my students and they are able to be interactive and are also able to socialize with their friends. The engagement and cooperation that I have been getting from my students are amazing. To see them engage and adapt to this continuum of learning that we are facing together. Math has been a challenge to teach online because my students are very hands-on and need a lot of adult modeling to master a skill. I have used platforms such as Nearpod to find and create interactive math lessons that will facilitate their learning. I have also accessed Teachers Pay Teachers interactive resources. These have proved very useful thus far in our live sessions. A gift card to Teachers Pay Teachers would provide my students with more interactive math and reading activities.
