My students are ages 3-21 and attend my adapted environmental science class once a week. There are also special education students from our neighboring school who come over once a week. In my class, the students learn how to take care of pets, manage gardens, and access and care for their environment. My program addresses South Carolina life science and Earth science standards which are adapted to my students' specific needs.
"Those you think cannot - CAN!" Our school motto describes my students perfectly.
With a creative approach, my students are able to care for their environment!
My Project
After my students become 4-H members, we can officially start our 4-H club! The local 4-H organization is run through Clemson University's Clemson Extension program. This project will allow each student in my adapted environmental science class to become a card-carrying member of 4-H!
Even students with significant disabilities are able to be contributing members of the community!
According to Clemson Extension, "The South Carolina 4-H Youth Development Program uses a learn-by-doing approach, the involvement of caring adults, and the knowledge and resources of Clemson University and the land grant university system to empower youth to become healthy, productive, and contributing members of society." The students at my school need to know that they too can be contributing members of society! By building a 4-H club, the students will learn how to take care of themselves through by growing and eating healthy foods, as well as how to sell products we make.
By becoming 4-H members, the students will have access to curriculum, speakers, and special activities design for our local region. The students will be able to learn important life skills such as gardening, recycling, healthy eating, etc., that will allow them to better access their environment!
