My Project

The way in which we teach math has changed. It is no longer about mimicking and memorizing steps and procedures. We want out students to own their thinking and be able to make sense of the math. In doing so, they are becoming flexible and fluent in math and are able to come at a math problem from any angle.

Mathematicians only use algorithms and procedures 4% of the time.

The other 96% of the time they are using reasoning in their work. It is my job to help teachers teach math in a way students can own their thinking. In order to do this I need to become more comfortable with mathematical reasoning and learn how to get teachers involved so they can help their students become stronger mathematicians.

The U.S. is behind many other countries in our mathematics education. I want to begin closing that gap and help to get our students thinking like mathematicians and more importantly, foster a love for math.
