This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In kindergarten, I need to build a firm foundation in math! The best way to learn math is through play! My children will be exploring, experimenting, counting, sorting, and explaining. Young children often have trouble with symbolic concepts. For this reason, my classroom needs manipulatives.
I teach kindergarten in a Title I school which means we are a very low income school.
Many of my students come from single parent or low income homes. My classroom is a safe haven for them. My students comes to class each day wearing a beautiful smile and just happy to be here at school. I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.
My Project
"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said. This is the motto I live by and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day. Early exposure to math and number activities will promote my students to become more comfort with these skills. Also, additional opportunities to practice these skills will increase my students' confidence when working with math and number concepts and will lead him/her to believe he/she is great at math. Math learning is most exciting for children when hands-on manipulatives are incorporated. Manipulatives give children tangible representations of the otherwise abstract concepts related to numbers and counting.
Having these math manipulatives will allow my students to work on math activities in such a way that it will come to life.
Math does not need to be an abstract idea. With these tools every student will have the opportunity to understand why math is a necessity in our everyday life.
