My students need an easel, and art supplies to kickoff our school wide contest to strengthen our school community, teach financial literacy, and improve our playground!
WE ARE TK! Our class is ready to be noticed. We want to build a stronger school-wide community by kicking off a contest that supports Common Core strategies, that teaches financial literacy and creative art education, and that will improve our very HOT outdoor playground!
We are a TK class in a small, rural school district.
This is the second year having TK in our district. It's been a challenge getting noticed at our school and in the community. We have a great program, an awesome group of kids, and it's time to let everybody know it. This year our district has been improving our math programs by piloting new curriculum, learning about and implementing "Number Talks", and other CC strategies. Let's also add financial literacy!
Since we are a new program, our playground could really use some improvements. Right now we have a bark area with a play structure. There is no shade, no grass, no bike path, no art/sensory area, and no sandbox. These are things that every early childhood playground should come with to give kids proper gross motor, exploratory, and artistic opportunities. These two challenges, being included and needing a proper playground, have giving me an idea to put TK on the map and build financial literacy skills and creativity.
My Project
A school-wide contest that's what! Our TK class will launch a contest that will challenge any and all kids pre-K through 8th grade to create a one-of-a-kind early childhood playground.
Students will be required to draw a plan, create a materials list, and a budget. They will also be asked to come up with creative ways to fund the project. Their plan must include a built-in outdoor art easel, a sandbox, a bike trail, a grassy area, a shade solution, and storage. My TK class, along with administration will vote for the winning idea. The winner will have the opportunity to take part in the project if funding allows and they will get a plaque on the playground with their name.
I have requested an outdoor art easel because artistic, creative expression is the TK way. My class will be able to create signs to advertise our contest and launch this project.
The learning in this project encompasses everything from art to financial literacy to community building and I can't wait to get started!
This project will make a difference in the lives of so many kids.
Not only will it encourage all kids in our school to use life skills to support a fun project, but it will bring our community closer together and bring awareness to early learning and build support for many TK classes to come. It will also show kids that they have a voice, their ideas matter, and working together with their community can have a huge impact. Thank you for taking the time to read about my class. Let's do it!
