This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Our school is a Title I School in an urban neighborhood. Our students have experienced a lot of trauma. Our school goal this year has been to equip our students with the tools they need to feel safe, loved, and valued in our school, community, and at home. We have hired a Restorative Justice Counselor who trains staff and works with students in our Restorative Justice Room. We have adopted a community circle meeting practice in grades Prek -5. A Community Circle is a meeting where everyone's voice is valued and heard. It is a safe space where students can share their feelings and ideas and support each other socially and emotionally. We have seen tremendous SEL growth in our students. The impact is significantly fewer suspensions; more empathetic conversations between students and staff; less need for Response Teams and disciplinary action and more use of Care Teams to help students deal with their strong emotions and return them to class ready to learn.
The Fun Day Committee wants to Celebrate these grows with glows at a glow party!
The Glow Party items requested will help the students celebrate their work in the Restorative Justice Room/ Community Circles. This will make a memory for them that will carry into next year.
Every year we celebrate the end of the year with a Fun Day/ Field Day. This year the organizing team wants to celebrate our building-wide SEL/ Restorative Justice Practices that were utilized this year. We want to transform our Restorative Justice Room into a Glow Party for our students, to celebrate the work they have done in this space this year. Please help us celebrate our students' growth and hard work this year.
