My Students

“Invisible threads are the strongest ties.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche. My students work hard and once their interest is sparked . . . move out of the way! Eager to engage once they are invested, a typical day in the classroom surrounds making meaningful connections.

My sixth grade students are eager to learn and love to have a say in their own learning.

Many of them come to the classroom with a individual passion that has either been fostered outside or inside of the classroom. They are passionate when given a choice and an ear that will listen. In true middle school fashion, my students love to learn and question a lot of topics. When a topic interests and resonates with them, they love reading, discussing, and making connections. When given the opportunity, my students choose to learn and expand on issues that matter to them. They are typical middle schoolers in that they are searching for themselves but still have a idealistic view on the world. My school helps to advance their search for individuality by incorporating a variety of technology and providing out of school activities that are fueled by student choice.

My Project

Many of my students have never been on an airplane. On a daily basis, they may only see people that look like themselves. These autobiographies and picture books will open dialogue and understanding in Middle Eastern culture specifically through Malala Yousafzai's powerful story. Her story will help students identify and find similarities with a culture that is different from their own.

While many of my students have perhaps heard of Malala, they have yet to hear her own words.

Malala's story is incredibly powerful and will inspire my student's to understand the commonalities that are shared between middle eastern and American cultures and values.
