My students need books in which they are the main character. They need to see themselves in every story, changing the world, changing their world, or just having an adventure.
Every child deserves to be the main character in a book. Our students are smart, kind, funny, and come from very diverse backgrounds. Most of our student population receives free and reduced lunch, and for many, the school library is the only library they've ever used. That makes it extremely important that the books here be relevant to their lives.
I love my job - each day I get to help children find books that engage, inspire, and captivate them.
Our students love reading, and I hope to be able to provide them with books that they'll love.
My Project
Have you ever read a book about a magical talking animal, and made a direct connection to your own life? Me neither. I have read about human characters like me, though, children with families like mine, struggles like mine, overcoming challenges and persevering. Everyone needs that book.
Every student deserves to be the main character.
With the books I've chosen, my students will see themselves. A book like Hidden Figures shows the power of women, Malala's Magic Pencil shows children changing the world, and Hello, Universe shows friendships forming in the unlikeliest of places. Children learn empathy through stories. They see themselves represented overcoming challenges, and they see others doing the same. They learn acceptance and kindness, and they find power in themselves. We need these books.
