My students need chromebooks to be able to create post-secondary plans, apply to jobs, work on financial literacy skills (banking), and be able to become independent students that will be prepared for a technologically driven society.
My students are in grades 9th through 12th, in an inner city school. Our school is a "Title I School", where everyone is eligible for free lunch. This financial need is also in their homes, where the most basic of tools for their education is not available to them. However, this does not stop my students from making plans and setting goals.
My high school students have dreams and plans, but often time find themselves unsure of where to start .
Most of them want to apply to jobs, colleges, or scholarships. Since many do not have internet access in their homes, they are unable to do these things from there. My students try to maximize their time in school in order to do scholarship searches, search for jobs and apply, search for colleges, and utilize Naviance a college and career program.
My students want to be able to obtain jobs so they can contribute to their families and be able to have access to an online world. Many have dreams of going away to college and to some it is being the first in their families to be a productive citizen in society.
My Project
The vast majority of my students come from poverty-stricken neighborhoods, where they do not have internet access. In a world where everything is done online, my students find it difficult to be able to do many things. Having access to Chromebooks will help my students be able to research/apply for colleges, apply for jobs and scholarships, obtain health care and become better at using a computer which is a skill needed today.
When you live in a world of drugs and violence, the use of a computer helps you escape and see the great things out in the world that will motivate you to do better.
I plan on using the chromebooks for small group weekly sessions with my students as part of group counseling where we will address their needs and ideas. I have approximately 250 students to reach and my goal is that having this resource available they will be able to know where to go to outside of our sessions. Since we no longer have a library, this will help my students explore a world of opportunities.
