This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach over 120 inquisitive, intelligent, and very informed 4th and 5th graders Science. Over the past two years they have learned everything from how the Earth spins to how engineers create and build products. When studying the engineering design process with my 4th graders they learned how to go through the steps to create an original product or improve an existing one. We hold an annual Engineering Fair where students display the products they have created. In 5th grade the focus is on function and design. They have to research and build prosthetic arms that can lift 25 grams. My students have shown their interest and ability to think out of the box to come up with solutions to many issues. My students are risk-takers and will become future scientist of tomorrow.
My Project
This is the second of 6 tables needed so that students can conduct experiments, take notes, and build products in a safe, productive, manner. Our current tables are over 20 years old and falling apart. They constantly need repair and have even fallen on students! Thankfully no one has been seriously injured. Our weekly schedule includes an introduction activity, taking notes, inquiry labs, research, and assessments. We need good strong sturdy tables to ensure our work can be completed without worrying if the legs will bend and injured someone. I am creating the world’s next engineers and we need tables!
