Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is, Title I, in the 1st full year as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme . Diverse describes our student population as well as our staff and teachers too!

Our students are hungry for learning and experimenting with new ideas and materials, all while being engaged with lessons that are interesting, fun, exciting and relevant to the world around them.

As an art teacher I am teaching my students how art connects to all other content areas the world they live in, what they can do with what they learn in an art class! Helping the students change the culture of their community by creating art shows, displaying student art at various venues and creating public art for unexpected places is a big focus for me this year because our district has had some bad press lately and it is important that my students learn to take the bad with the good and turn the bad into something they learn from, not something that defines them!

My Project

I want students to feel that the art they make can make a difference when others look at their work. An anti-bullying, packing tape sculpture created with students in a circle holding hands, and on the inside of the sculpture are the blue lights, which blue is the bullying awareness color. We want to donate the sculpture at the end of the year to another middle school in our district that lost a student to a bullying incident in the beginning of this school year. It is important for students to know that gestures like this make a positive impact.
