My Students

My Special Education resource classroom welcomes students with a variety of disabilities: autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorders, intellectual disabilities, speech/language impairments, and learning disabilities including dyslexia and dyscalculia. Most of my students are at least two years below grade level in reading and mathematics, and struggle to succeed in grade-level lessons. My students and I work together to learn strategies to overcome or work around these challenges.

In spite of their disabilities, my students sparkle with potential and personality!

They are learning ways to contribute to their classrooms and the world through science, art, athletics, storytelling, cooperation, and good citizenship.

My Project

Many of my students, including those with autism and ADHD, struggle to manage their own emotions and behavior, and to make and keep friends. Some have difficulty understanding the perspectives of others. "My Story" Social Skills books and teacher guides are funny and engaging stories that help kids with Social Thinking Deficits understand why social skills matter, and help kids discover and practice these skills. The "ThinkAbout" series gives lesson plans and discussion guides for helping students develop skills for friendship and self-esteem. This will facilitate development of social skills groups to help students learn these skills.

Like many students with autism, or executive functioning challenges, several of my students struggle mightily with written language.

It is difficult for them to coordinate the skills needed for writing: penmanship, spelling, understanding the readers' perspective, selecting the most important ideas to write about, clearly explaining ideas, elaborating, and having patience with the writing process. Professional development books about supporting struggling writers would be so helpful! My students also need text resources to learn to write in response to a prompt.

My youngest students need materials for developing number sense. The Make a Splash 120 floor mat will allow them to see patterns in numbers, and see how adding or subtracting one or ten follows a pattern, too. A floor mat number line will be useful for developing an understanding of basic addition and subtraction, too.
