Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you can read, you can do anything! This mantra is repeated by the first grade students I teach. Our classroom is in a public school located in an urban, high-need community in Pennsylvania.
We have a unique situation in our classroom. Out of twenty-seven students only two have had previous formal education such as kindergarten and preschool. Besides academic learning, my students are also learning the basic social skills that are required in a classroom.
My students are excited to learn. They have overcome many obstacles such as poverty and language. They have made great strides in reading. Their fascination with books is endless. I would like to further their awareness through a classroom library which includes new non-fiction materials and listening centers that assist in the all important sight words as well as connect the importance of reading to other subjects such as math. Because this is also my first year teaching first grade, my library needs some assistance.
Nothing is better than opening a new book and being able to read it! Please help my students by building a library that will continue to foster and motivate their desire to read!! It will truly make a difference in their future academic life.
