Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a creative and engaged group, still at an age where they are motivated and excited to come to school and learn. About three-quarters of my class are English Language Learners. The majority come from low-income households and face many challenges.
What especially excites my students in the classroom are hands-on and integrated learning experiences!
It means a lot to them that school is a safe place where they not only feel cared for, but are engaged and challenged. They aspire to do wonderful things in this world and I believe that they will!
My Project
I teach reading in my classroom through reading groups. Students are grouped by reading level and given a book. They read and complete assignments independently, then we come together as a group a couple times a week to discuss their books.
Having engaging and relevant books is essential for my student's success as readers.
If they are not interested, or don't connect with the books they're reading, then there is not much to discuss. However, when they do connect, our discussions are animated and engaging. Through these discussions I am able to teach so much, such as: supporting your opinion with evidence, making inferences, analyzing figurative language, detecting themes, comparing and contrasting characters... the list goes on and on.
We appreciate any support that you can give in bringing engaging reading material into our classroom!
