We Are Readers and Leaders!

Help me give my students a library filled with different books and a shelf that they can get lost in during independent reading time!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Andre's classroom raised $1,000

My Project

It's about half way through the school year and I'd love to give my students a fresh set of books in their own classroom that they can explore during independent reading bags. Comfy seating arrangements and bean bags have been funded, which has been pivotal for independent reading and engaging students by also help to incentivize. Now, I'd love to give them even more books to choose from that are not only interesting, but meaningful and diverse.

When my students enter my classroom in September, I always let them know that the goal is for them to begin, or hopefully continue to view themselves as readers and writers.

More importantly, I always remind them of the quote by Toni Morrison which is, "If you find a book you really want to read and it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." Slowly, but sure they've become very enthusiastic about writing. Reading and writing has become a genuine interest, as opposed to a task for a grade. By funding this project, you will be helping my students continue do these very things with authentic joy and excitement.

It is important that my students see themselves in the books they are reading because it lets them know that their world is not one dimensional, and that the possibilities are endless. It reassures them that there is a world outside of the community they live in. So, the books I've picked out reflect the population of students I serve. Not only are the authors Black and Brown, but so are many of the characters. The bookshelf is included, because they will need a home that makes picking the books out and putting the books back, fun and easy!
