Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Common Core Standards have arrived. We are a nation that lacks students who can effectively read and write. In an effort to change this from becoming the norm we are now challenging students to be that researcher and writer but we must first teach them how to do this and to do it RIGHT!

Our nation lacks writers.

We come from an urban district where the graduation rate from high school is less than 50%. This is not acceptable and I refuse to let this continue. We must go back to basics and teach students how to write the the RIGHT way. My class consists of active, eager and motivated five year old kindergarten students. Don't let their age fool you for I see their potential and their ability. I truly believe for I have witnessed and been a part of their wonderful learning. They can do it if we instill the love of learning and teaching them how to write the RIGHT way.

My Project

Showing, modeling, doing...I do, we do, you do as they say in education is the way to learn. Practice, practice and practice some more in which ever task you tackle is my motto. The writing resource center activities will provide my students the opportunity to learn the process of writing various pieces of text that are specifically aligned to the Common Core Standards of the country. The Time Magazine subscriptions allow the students to read texts that engaging which they can tie into their writing lessons. They are interesting and also just fun to read.

I tell the parents in my class how I saw my dad read the daily newspaper each morning while growing up and as soon as I could I began to do the same.

Newspapers are appealing on many levels from current events to the comics. They are informational as well as entertaining. Writing pieces have so many different forms and it is my job to plant the seed, nurture their process and watch how they bloom while they develop not only their writing skills but to experience the joy of writing.
