My students need a classroom set of the novel “Freak the Mighty” to read during the school year.

Hooray! This project is fully funded
A wonderful mix of curious, smart kids this 6th grade class loves to read and they love their Socratic Circles. Students hail from a variety of backgrounds, and many socio-economic levels in an urban area in the Southeastern United States.
Many students do not have the means to purchase supplemental reading materials.
Students in my class learn about and participate in Socratic Circles. This method of teaching reading involves the important aspects of communication and writing. However, high quality reading materials, especially novels. Is paramount to the success of the students.
Students love reading and participating in these Socratic discussions. For many of these 6th grade students, it is the first time they have had a chance to participate in this type of academic discourse. Many are truly being heard for the first time. For the first novel of middle school, Freak the Mighty has all of the issues typical middle schoolers worry about—body image, being accepted, bullying, friendships, and academic worries.
I am requesting a class set of the Rodrick Philbrick novel “Freak the Mighty.” Students will be using this novel to learn about plot, character development, and to practice Socratic Circles. Students have been using paper copies of the novel, and because this is always a favorite novel for students, I feel they deserve a nice paperback copy of the book.
This book is more than language arts content; it is an opportunity for students to come together and to realize that inside all of is a Mighty; inside all of us is a broken person—a Freak— who with the help of a friend, can accept and give love.
