This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high-poverty area in Virginia; my school is small, with about 350 children enrolled. The children in my building are great kids; they thrive off positive motivation and are very intuitive when focused. We were named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006.
Currently, I am a Second grade teacher; I love teaching Second grade simply because kids are fun to teach at this level.
They are enthusiastic, happy to be at school, work together well, and they are the perfect mixture of independence and neediness in behavior and attitude!
They make me WANT to come to work :-)
My Project
I believe in using modern, colorful, and tangible visual aids to teach seemingly complex topics. The roller maps I currently have are not K-2 friendly and are severely outdated-the Southern Ocean is not even represented on them and I had to write it on a sentence strip and tape it onto the map! My current maps are hardly an attractive model for my kids to learn from...
With an updated pull-down world/US map, I will be able to teach confidently using accurate information and create learning stations around it, which will offer a different way for the kids to interpret the concept.
My kids will be able to locate oceans and continents easily, see where they live in the U.S., and see where the prime meridian and equator lie.
Kids enjoy "seeing" the world via a map or globe and pointing to countries that they have heard about on a cartoon they've watched.
I don't want my kids to be "lost"; I want my kids to be aware of life outside of their neighborhoods. I want them to be intrigued with how others live in other countries.
With a new map, I feel I will be better-equipped to "navigate" and enhance my lessons for better student achievement. Thanks for listening!
