We Are Looking For Heroes!

Help me give my students some heros to relate to. We are doing a unit about what it takes to be successful in life. We want our students to have varied biography sets to choose from.

My Students

I work in a middle school that has a glorious mash-up of all kinds of students. We are the bridge from elementary school to secondary school, here in sixth grade. While some students come in looking as if they are working hard to be teenagers, others are reserved and very tiny. We have some students that still believe in Santa! Our students come from diverse backgrounds and socio-economic groups. Some take fancy vacations while others are homeless or in the foster system.

I am charged with helping our Reading Language Arts program be challenging and relevant.

My Project

We use the Reading Workshop method at my school. This involves having students in small groups that read the same book. We call these groups "bookclubs." While many of our students will read more difficult books about the famous individual, these books are accessable for most of our students without being seen as childish. We currenlty have no sets of this type.

Students will read these biographies looking for inspiring patterns of success.

This includes obstacles that were overcome and the people that helped the individual reach thier life's goals.

We hope these up to date book sets will help model success and offer inspiration for all of our students.
