This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher, I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world to get to work with 24 wonderful students everyday. I work in a Title I school in East Palo Alto, California. My school has about 90% of our students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch. All of my students come from families that do many things to help provide their children with happy and healthy lives. Unfortunately, many of my parents are either unable to provide their children with the proper education tools or are unaware of the proper education tools to help their children.

Many of the families have both parents working multiple jobs or even just one parent active in their lives working multiple jobs.

My kids come to school happy every day, ready to learn, excited about life, and I just want to give them the best education possible.

My Project

We are just starting off our 2018-2019 academic year and I can already see many of my students struggling in math. I decided to assess the situation and find a solution. My students are kinesthetic learners. Many math strategies are taught with the idea that most learners are visual. I have discovered in my classroom this not true. Half of my classroom were able to answer math problems correctly when given the correct materials.

We are requesting math materials and games that are made for the true kinesthetic learner.

We are requesting hands on materials. My students don't need flash cards but materials they can feel and use to create the right answer to math problems. In our classroom we do a lot of small group learning. Students not included in my small group are working together with partners. They are engaging in math games and activities. These new materials requested will allow my students the ability to be a kinesthetic learner and learn math strategies without teacher guidance.
