We Are in a Book! Our Favorite Characters Brought to Life

My students need books by our favorite authors like Mo Willems, Dr. Seuss, Todd Parr and Oliver Jeffers along with some plush animals (characters) from the stories to get excited about reading!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come into first grade knowing the basics of reading and leave independent and eager readers! This collection of books will help my growing readers find authors and characters they love and books they will want to read over and over again.

My classroom is full of eager first graders, who are emergent readers!

They love to read the world around them and work hard to improve their reading skills everyday. Our school is in an urban environment, with a tremendous school and neighborhood community. Our staff, administrators, parents, and community members work together to provide the best education possible to our hard working and dedicated students.

My Project

Learning to read is a wonderful journey with lots of bumps along the way. What can make it easier is finding characters you love and want to read more about! The author Mo Willems has long been beloved in my classroom. He has an incredible ability to write books that are so incredibly funny and engaging, yet attainable to beginning readers. Kids want to read his books over and over again giving them the repeated practice they need, but don't often want to do! Reading a Dr. Seuss book is a brain workout! But they are so great for practicing phonics skills and stretching out words. Todd Parr teaches great and simple life lessons and Oliver Jeffers combines amazing illustrations with unsuspecting characters. What it comes down to is that kids are building so many skills by reading these books without even knowing it! They're so in love with the characters and the joy that comes from reading these books that they don't even realize how much they're learning at the same time!

I was inspired to write this project because of the effect I saw these authors had on some of my most timid readers last year.

Kids who were barely reading at the beginning of the year were standing up in front of the class reading Mo Willems to their fellow students with such confidence and pride. The smile on their face and the feeling they had of being a successful reader is what I hope to give every student.
