Welcome to our class! We are a group of first and second graders who are eager to learn to read with our English-speaking peers. Our challenge is that English is not our first language. We are requesting 4 Leapfrog Tag Reading Centers to help us accomplish our goals.
I have the best job in the school.
My job is to teach 20 English language learners who are in the first and second grades. We are a self-contained class that has a lot of fun learning and playing together. School is a safe place for them to grow as new citizens of this country.
My students are very challenged by their living conditions at home. Some students are migrant workers and are required to help their family make money after school and don't have time to do anything else. Some students live in trailers with as many as three other families living with them at the same time. Lastly, most of the students' parents don't speak English at home so they have a hard time helping with homework and school projects.
Hardships at home do not stop my students from enjoying the wonderful school we have. We are currently placed in a trailer. We call it the "magic trailer of learners." We have done our best to transform our trailer with the few supplies we have and our vivid imaginations.
My Project
I am requesting 4 Leapfrog Tag Readers. A Tag reader is a special pen that is programed to read books aloud to students. These special pens can sound out words and they also ask comprehension questions at the end of stories. They are truly a magical learning tool.
I envision these tools being used in my classroom during guided reading. This is a time where students are broken down into small groups and take turns learning to read at a table with the teacher. While not with the teacher, the other students complete reading games and activities independently. These 4 pens that I am requesting would be one of the other activities students would complete when not working with me. The main components of learning to read and learning English are listening, speaking and actually practicing reading. This project will help students practice listening and speaking.
Your donations will greatly improve my classroom.
You will be providing technology that will help students become better English speakers and readers. This package allows students to be read to individually by fluent English speakers. This is not an experience they would get at home due to adults in their lives also not speaking English. This project will change my students' lives by showing them that school is important and a place to learn and grow.
