Help me give my students the materials such as masking tape and embroidery floss to allow them an outlet to express themselves and explore STEAM careers.
My students enter my STEAM Lab full of energy! They enjoy asking thought-provoking questions as they find solutions to complete tasks. These young students are super happy to be exposed to a variety of devices and kits, especially when they are carrying out a task similar to a real-life robotics programmer, electronics circuit designer, animator, or music composer! This school year kids can return to our building and will follow a hybrid learning model or participate in remote learning.
The motivation of my students to become STEAM leaders in a 21st-century world amazes me.
We are a Title I school, which means that we receive financial assistance due to a high percentage of students from low-income families. This year, our school, once again, qualified for a federally-funded program that provides free breakfast and lunch to all students. Many students face personal challenges outside of our learning environment.
Nevertheless, they eagerly participate when in my STEAM Lab or when learning from home, crave new experiences, enjoy sharing their learning with others, and are excited about their promising future!
My Project
As in past years, I continue to provide hands-on exploration and cross-curricular instruction during STEAM class. Adhering to the physical distancing guidelines established by the CDC and to provide materials for remote learners, my goal is to put together individual bags of materials for students to utilize when completing Future Ready STEAM Challenges. Remote students will obtain these items during our weekly drive-thru distributions or, if no transportation, will be delivered to the student's home.
Our "Future Ready" STEAM Challenges inspire students' interests in various STEAM careers, allow for mastery of a new skill, and promote exploration of a student's innovative ideas.
An example of a popular activity is for students to become a design engineer, with the task of building a protocol of a treehouse that would provide comfort throughout the entire year in Pennsylvania. It is quite interesting to see how students interpret the word "comfort". Last school year, we had 4th-grade girls use recycled items from the STEAM Lab to develop her rendition of a blanket for her treehouse. In the summer months, rainwater collected on the roof and dripped into the blanket to cool the house. She connected the blanket to rooftop solar panels, providing warmth in the winter. It was fabulous!
By providing Future Ready STEAM Challenges, my students are exploring careers at an early age, while developing a sense of curiosity, creativity, and ingenuity. Although my STEAM budget has been completely cut, I know that I must provide these items to better develop ALL of my hybrid and remote learners' continued interest in STEAM careers for their successful future.
