This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a title 1 school in New York City where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My school's is in population is made up of different nationalities and races; such as African American, Hispanic, Asian and White. My class is know as ICT (inclusive co-teaching) This means that I teach students with special needs along with students in the general education population. My students enjoy the time together especially when they are able to watch CNN Student news.
As a group we share what we learned, we work together as a team .
We strive to be successful despite the challenges in the neighborhood. My school is in a very diverse neighborhood. Which is excellent in more ways than one. But, as an individual middle schooler can be difficult. The neighbor is over crowded with many who have not completed high school. Neighbors who struggle to compete for low wage jobs, and self identity. But, as a school we open our doors for the students and community to use after school and on the weekends. We are striving for a safe caring environment.
My Project
All students enjoy reading graphic novels. American Born Chinese is just that. This book will get the students interested in reading while learning about stereotype and bullying. It is important because we all label people even when we do not realize we are doing so. How to we react towards stereotyping? Do I stereotype? Why do I do this? are some of the questions that will be answered while reading American Born Chinese. Having a notebook that is specifically for this unit will assist them in documenting their feelings and the feelings of the characters. While answering the objective and big question of the day. Because of time (not enough time in the day) a large timer will be beneficial for the students to be able to see how much time they have left without interrupting the class by shouting out how much time is left.
We are all judged by what we say, how we look and the company we keep.
This plays into stereotyping. The students will be able to read this book and relate to it in a personal way. We will also read about the author and get answer to some of the questions the students may have like; Why did you write this story as a graphic novel and not a conventional novel? and, did you personally experience some sort of stereotyping?
I would like for my student to show off their work. Using the storage bins and the desk top file will help us keep our work organized. Using a hanging file folder which I will label by class and student will make this project more streamlined. The border for our bulletin boards will make it pop and others to see. Lord of the Flies are worn so, we need replacements please.
